I come from a long line of people who have held too much death

for one person in one lifetime.

And they figured out how to be the vessel for that grief without cracking…

Or maybe they didn’t.

Perhaps I am the descendent of many broken shards trying to put themselves back together.

May the source of strength that guided them help me find the courage to keep trying

to transform this darkness into light.

What is the correct container of grief?

When your brothers’ bodies are not bodies anymore, but fodder in an argument,

For your grief to be turned into a weapon against others, or against you, but most likely both.

And before you can even bury the bodies you must justify your overwhelming pain

As if grief is a competition rather than a shared tragedy.

What is the correct container of grief

When what you need to express is rage at a government that commits atrocities in the name of your safety?

When the ones you grieve didn’t have the right names to matter to the people who matter to you?

Your grief is yours, housed within your own body.

And you need to feel the corners of it before it turns to poison,

and you need to give it a voice before the screaming deafens your heart,

no matter how many people in your “safe” spaces tell you

to swallow it,

because it’s not the right shape or size,

for what they think your body has a right to feel.

But they have bought the lie that one history needs to be erased for another’s to matter,

and there needs to be a “winner” in a situation that was set up for everyone to lose,

that there’s a simple one-size-fits-all explanation of the complexity of the region

that can be understood from memes and maps that don’t tell even half the story.
